“सात मराठे आणि एकवीस शीख — इतिहासातील अमर पराक्रम”

इतिहासात काही लढाया अशा असतात जिथे जिंकणे हे ध्येय नसते, तर मातृभूमीच्या सन्मानासाठी प्राणार्पण करणे हेच विजय ठरते.
अशाच दोन लढायांनी भारताच्या शौर्याला अमरत्व दिलं —
१६७४ मधील नेसरीची लढाई आणि १८९७ मधील सरागढीची लढाई.
१६७४ साली कोल्हापूरजवळच्या नेसरी येथे छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे सेनापती प्रातापराव गुज्‍जर आणि त्यांच्या सहा शूर सैनिकांनी, एकूण सात मराठ्यांनी, हजारो मुघल सैन्यावर धाडसी हल्ला केला.
ते सर्व वीर रणांगणावर वीरगतीला प्राप्त झाले.
छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांनी त्यांच्या स्मृतीत प्रातापरावांच्या कन्येचा विवाह आपल्या पुत्र राजाराम महाराजांशी लावून देऊन त्या बलिदानाला सर्वोच्च सन्मान दिला.
या बलिदानाचे स्मरण आजही लोकगीताच्या ओळीत जिवंत आह
“वेडात मराठे वीर दौडले सात!”
दोनशे तेवीस वर्षांनंतर, तोच पराक्रम १२ सप्टेंबर १८९७ रोजी अफगाण सीमेवरील सरागढी येथे झळकला.
फक्त २१ शीख सैनिक, हविलदार ईशर सिंग यांच्या नेतृत्वाखाली, दहा हजार अफगाण आक्रमकांविरुद्ध शेवटपर्यंत लढले.
शत्रूंनी चौकी उद्ध्वस्त केली, पण शीख वीरांनी आत्मसमर्पण केले नाही.
ते सर्व २१ सैनिक रणांगणावर हुतात्मा झाले, पण त्यांनी दोन ब्रिटिश किल्ले — लॉकहार्ट आणि गुलिस्तान — सुरक्षित ठेवले.
नेसरीचे सात मराठे आणि सरागढीचे एकवीस शीख — या दोन्ही लढायांनी सिद्ध केलं की,
“संख्या नव्हे, धैर्यच विजय ठरवते.”
हेच भारतीय शौर्याचे खरे प्रतिबिंब —
कर्तव्य, निष्ठा आणि मातृभूमीप्रेमाची अखंड परंपरा.
In history, some battles are fought not to claim victory, but to honor the motherland. In such struggles, giving one’s life becomes the true triumph. Two such battles have immortalized Indian valor — the Battle of Nesari in 1674 and the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897.
In 1674, near Nesari, close to Kolhapur, Senapati Prataprao Gujar, commander of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, along with six brave soldiers — seven Marathas in total — courageously attacked thousands of Mughal soldiers.
All seven laid down their lives on the battlefield, attaining martyrdom.
To honor their sacrifice, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj gave his son Rajaram Maharaj in marriage to Prataprao’s daughter — a supreme tribute to their bravery.
Their heroism lives on in folk songs to this day:
“Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat!”
(The seven brave Marathas ran mad into battle!)
Two hundred twenty-three years later, the same spirit of courage shone again on 12 September 1897 at Saragarhi, on the Afghan frontier.
Only 21 Sikh soldiers, under the leadership of Havildar Ishar Singh, faced 10,000 Afghan attackers and fought to the very end.
The enemy destroyed the outpost, yet the Sikhs refused to surrender.
All 21 soldiers attained martyrdom, but their sacrifice safeguarded the two British forts — Lockhart and Gulistan.
The seven Marathas of Nesari and the 21 Sikhs of Saragarhi prove a timeless truth:
“It is not numbers, but courage that decides victory.”
This is the true reflection of Indian valor — an unbroken tradition of duty, loyalty, and love for the motherland.
